Fans packed the WestJet Concert Stage on Sunday August 17 to see Joan Jett & The Blackhearts deliver a powerhouse rock n’ roll concert at The Fair at the PNE.
Joan Jett seemed to be having a blast onstage as she smiled and winked at the audience, while throwing in her trademark growls into her powerhouse vocal performance. And fans responded with roars and cheers! Her raspy voice was unchanged from when she ruled the charts in 1980’s.
The show kicked off with “Bad Reputation” bringing concert goers to their feet. The set list included fan favourites like “Cherry Bomb”, “I Love Rock N’ Roll”, “Crimson and Clover”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me”, “I Hate Myself For Loving You”, “Love is Pain”, “Victim of Circumstance” and many more resulting in loud and roaring applause and multiple standing ovations.
While all the classic songs were played, Joan Jett took an opportunity to play from her latest album, Unvarnished, introducing each of her new songs with their inspiration and meaning. “Fragile” is about how fragile life can be and about one’s own mortality. “Make it Back” is about the resilience of the human spirit. She recounted how touched she was to see how neighbours came together to help each other during and in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy.
The biggest highlight of the night was the massive singalong with the audience chanting “Oh Yeah, Oh Yeah” on “Do you Want to Touch”. The audience continued to chant on classic rock anthems like “I Love Rock n’ Roll” and below is a short video clip of that performance. What an amazing summer night it was!
