Jillian’s Favourite Rooms

To complete our series of questions to Jillian Harris, co-host of LOVE IT OR LIST IT VANCOUVER and designer of the 2013 PNE Prize Home, we asked her to tell us her favourite room to design in every home.

Not surprising from the gorgeous results she has produced throughout her career, Jillian admits that nurseries are her favourite room to design. “There’s a way you can turn rooms for children into beautiful spaces,” she says as she speaks of one of her latest projects – the nursery for the daughter of Molly Mesnick, wife of former Bachelor star Jason Mesnick.

Other top rooms on her list: ensuites, bedrooms and even outdoor spaces.

While the PNE Prize Home doesn’t have a dedicated nursery, there’s plenty of space to add one. Have you looked through the virtual tour? We are so proud of this year’s home!

Homeowners and the Dreaded Reno

Jillian Harris, co-host of LOVE IT or LIST IT VANCOUVER and designer of the 2013 PNE Prize Home, is no stranger to the enormous job that any home renovation can become. Currently renovating her own kitchen on top of all her other projects, we asked Jillian what advice she would give to homeowners about to begin a renovation.

Plan, plan, plan is her first word of advice. It’s important to have a strategy when beginning a renovation and while timelines are important, you should be flexible and ready to accommodate any bumps in the road (of which there are always a few). She recommends “[letting] the project happen at its own pace” and having patience throughout the renovation. Of course, to make your life easier, she agrees that it’s best to seek the help of a professional and hire a contractor if your budget allows.

Before and after. Construction jobs are always messy but the end result of the Prize Home was stunning.

Making Space for Kids

Everyone wants to give their kids a comfortable space to call their own – but how do you avoid making your home look like a day care? Jillian Harris, co-host of LOVE IT or LIST IT VANCOUVER and designer of the 2013 PNE Prize Home, told us her thoughts.

Designing a space for children provides good opportunity to have fun but it can be challenging to think outside the box of the typical look of a kid’s room. She suggests you move away from the typical bright pink or blue and use a variety of colours to add life into the room as she says, “When I have children, I am going to create my own line of children’s toys that are NOT primary colours!”

It’s also important to listen to your kid’s ideas. “I interview the kids like any other client and find out what they like, then interpret that to incorporate their personality into their room,” Jillian comments. Through this approach, designer, parent and child are all happy with the end result.

This year’s Prize Home has a great space for kids to cozy up in after a day on the slopes. Have you taken a look at the entire design? This is one you won’t want to miss!
