The Roller Coaster of Love

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there is no doubt that love is in the air. Everyone is all too willing to share their ‘meet-cute’ story, but in the midst of countless dating, wedding and love tales, you can stumble across one that makes you melt. Case in point, a PNE favourite love story that happened on our very own Wooden Roller Coaster.

I had asked my wife to marry me on the old Wooden Roller Coaster in Playland, and then within 7 weeks from first meeting on an airplane we were married.

Talk about a whirlwind!

For her wedding present, I had ride photos from the day I proposed framed and wrote her a short story on the back.

Now, over 20 years later, we’re still happily married and still love all the ups and downs of the Wooden Roller Coaster!

New Year News

HAPPY NEW YEAR! January 1st always seems to bring feelings of endless possibilities and an anticipation for what’s ahead, and for the staff here at the PNE, this couldn’t be more true. After spending countless hours these past few months carving out brand new ideas for 2014, we’re eager to now roll out over the next few months some new, big and thrilling plans for all of your favourite attractions! 2014 will be an exciting year here at the PNE, and hope the same for all of you!

We’ll be announcing many of our plans over the next few months, but in the spirit of sharing New Year’s goals, here’s a bit of a teaser for what’s in store…

PLAYLAND 2014

BumperCars

Rock out, drive hard and hold on! Rock-N-Cars is a brand-new attraction to Playland this season.  It’ll be FREE with admission and ready for opening day on May 3.

THE FAIR 2014

Our concert lineup is almost locked down, we're already getting in application from NEW unique food vendors, and are working through plans for SEVERAL brand new shows, exhibits and attractions.

A Holiday Feast

The holiday season is officially in full swing and with only a few days left until Christmas, the next item on your To Do List is most certainly putting together your grocery list for the perfect holiday feast. With friends and family all gathering together, this is definitely a meal you want to pull out all of the stops for. While your table will certainly be filled with all of the classics including roasted turkey, buttery mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce, no holiday feast is complete without a signature dish that is totally unique to your meal! To make your holiday planning a little easier, the PNE’s head chef, Aaron Jeffs, has agreed to share his tried-and-true recipe for roasted squash which will have all of your holiday guests begging for more!  Aaron assures you that being “sweet and savoury, this dish has the flavour of Christmas in the North.”

Roasted Acorn Squash with Red Onions and Cranberries

-1 large red onion

-1/3 cup cranberries

-3 tbsp. olive oil

-1/2 tbsp. kosher salt

-1/2 tsp cracked pepper

-2 tbsp. pure maple syrup

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Peel and chop acorn squash into 3/4 inch cubes discarding the seeds and skin and place in an oven safe roasting dish

Peel and chop red onion and add to squash

Drizzle squash and onion with olive oil and sprinkle salt and pepper and massage until well coated

Bake in oven until squash is soft enough to pierce with a fork and browning in colour (approx. 30-45 minutes)

Remove from oven and up oven temperature to 425 degrees

Add dried cranberries and maple syrup to squash mixture and gently stir to coat

Place back in oven for 7 to 10 minutes to caramelize

Remove from oven and serve
