The Other 350 Days

Ask any PNE Manager what the reaction is when they tell people they work at the PNE and they will all say the same thing… “Is that a part time job?” Or “Well, what do you do the rest of the year?”  For the last 15 days of the summer, we are all working day and night at the Fair at the PNE, but make no mistake, this is absolutely a full time job.

Did you realize that while you are touring the PNE Prize Home, we are already making plans for the next one?  Or that while you lose your lunch on Atmosfear our Playland Team is working behind the scenes to get ready for Fright Nights?

While The Fair certainly is the best part of summer, the PNE is constantly in full swing all year round. Between planning the next big event up to a year out, maintaining the 114+ acres of public parks and gardens and managing our seven on-site buildings, we’re busy hosting a variety of concerts, sporting and community events, tradeshows and private parties.  In March alone you can enjoy the following events:

LADY ANTEBELLUM

Seven-time GRAMMY award-winning trio Lady Antebellum will bring their headlining TAKE ME DOWNTOWN TOUR to the Pacific Coliseum on March 10, 2014.

Ace the Interview

Here at the PNE we receive thousands of applications for a variety of positions and roles including part-time work at Playland, The Fair at the PNE and Fright Nights and even our year-round corporate management team. It’s tough to get noticed when you’re competing with so many people, so we spoke with Human Resources to gather some tips and tricks that you can apply to your resume, cover letter and interview habits to help you stand out from the other applicants and snag whatever position you’re applying for!

Cover Letter & Resume

Most seasonal positions at the PNE don’t require a cover letter, but if the position you’re applying for does, make sure to give it the attention it deserves. If you’re applying for a role where writing skills are required, this is your opportunity to showcase what you can do! Describe why you want the job, how your work experience relates to the position, and why you should be hired. The cover letter is a great place for an employer to get to know potential candidates.

Your resume should outline your relevant education and work experience, or if you don’t have work experience, you can explain what qualities you have that you think would make you a great employee. If you don’t know how to create a resume, there are lots of resources online to help you learn how to write an effective resume. One key thing that we would recommend is to keep your resume brief and to the point.  It should be a snapshot of your career and relevant experience, not a life-story!

The number one tip for cover letters and resumes? Always proof read! Spelling and grammatical errors should be caught before the documents are sent.

Interview

When you make it to the interview, remember to act professional! You might be asked to participate in a group interview where as many as 1500 people might come through in groups within one day, so this is your chance to stand out from the rest with a firm handshake, business-formal clothing, and a sincere smile. Make eye-contact with your interviewer, be polite and courteous and make your resume come alive by describing your work experience and how it is relevant to the role you’ve applied for. Always bring a copy of your resume and/or cover letter to an interview, keep your phone on silent, refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water, and, most importantly, just relax – you’ll do great!

Working at the PNE

If you grew up in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood or surrounding area, there’s a good chance you once worked at the PNE – or at least know someone who did. That’s because every year we interview thousands of people and hire to fill a variety of positions that help make Playland, Fright Nights, and, of course, The Fair a reality.

Salina, an HR Generalist, began her career with the PNE 3 years ago and has loved where her job has led her. “The staff at the PNE is amazing, and working here is like being with an extended family. The number of employees I have been able to meet is astounding, and the best thing about that is that every year employees are reaching amazing milestones with the company ranging anywhere from 20-50 years of service with the organization,” Salina says.

Apart from the great people who work here, Salina appreciates the new perspective her position has offered her as well. “My favorite part of working in HR is being able to be a part of the PNE and everything that we bring toward the community and the city as a whole. The concerts, events, Giants games, Playland, Fright Nights and of course The Fair all require a lot of planning and coordination in terms of hiring the right candidates, and being able to contribute toward that has been amazing.”

Whether you’re in HR, marketing, operations or are still a student – new positions open up all year and there are lots of seasonal positions available that help make the PNE the largest employer of youth in BC.
